Welcome to our new Chief Executive

Planning Aid Scotland is pleased to announce that Cherie Morgan will be joining as Chief Executive in the new year.

Cherie joins us from Play Scotland where she is currently Director of Projects. She brings a wealth of experience from almost 30 years of working in the third sector, helping communities influence decisions that shape their lives whilst championing inclusive participation and placemaking.

Her background spans strategic leadership, practical delivery, finance, governance and organisational development. Cherie is well-known for her work in effective engagement and has advised planners, policymakers and communities across Scotland on how to involve people meaningfully in shaping their places.

She also brings strong networks across planning, policy and community development, combined with a clear understanding of Scotland’s social and political context, and a personal commitment to integrity, collaboration and continuous learning. She is driven by a belief in creating the conditions for people and communities to thrive, and in the power of placemaking to support wellbeing.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the team at Planning Aid Scotland. It will be a privilege to lead an organisation with such a strong track record of helping people shape the places they live. I’m excited to work alongside colleagues, volunteers, and communities to build on that impact together,” said Cherie.

Cherie will take up the role on 2 February 2026, succeeding Johanna Boyd. Until then, David McAllister will continue as Interim Chief Executive.

Jill Paterson, Chair of Planning Aid Scotland, welcomed the appointment: “Cherie’s experience makes her an excellent fit for Planning Aid Scotland. She shares our values and is passionate about championing inclusion and meaningful engagement. Under her leadership, we can continue our push for a more accessible and inclusive planning system centred around the needs and aspirations of communities.

We are confident that Cherie will build on the strong foundations laid by our outgoing Chief Executive, Johanna Boyd, and help us grow and evolve in new and exciting directions. On behalf of the board, staff, and volunteers, we extend a warm welcome to Cherie, and look forward to working together in the new year.”
