Free training: Understanding planning, energy and community engagement
Planning Aid Scotland is pleased to share a new programme of free online training, running between January and March 2026.
Open to anyone across Scotland, the programme offers a practical introduction to engaging with the planning system. It is aimed at individuals and communities who want to take part more confidently in decisions affecting their local area, with a focus on renewable energy, community engagement and place-based planning. No prior planning knowledge is required.
Initial sessions will take place in January 2026, starting with “How to engage your community: A practical introduction”, “Understanding renewable energy and planning” and “Local Place Plans: Knowing the essentials” with additional topics added later. Full details and dates will be available on our Eventbrite page.
Designed to support active participation, the training explores how planning works in practice, including electricity and renewable energy applications, where community voices fit within decision-making, and how to develop strong community-led plans such as Local Place Plans and Community Action Plans. Practical engagement skills are embedded throughout, with sustainability and place at the heart of the approach.
Each session is practical, accessible for beginners, and rooted in real-world challenges.
All sessions will be recorded and available to rewatch for three months after delivery. Early booking is encouraged.
Please register for any sessions of interest and feel free to share this opportunity with colleagues, networks and community contacts. For questions or accessibility requirements, contact our Planning & Projects Officer Anne Krippler at anne@pas.org.uk.
