PAS is an independent organisation, an educational charity operating on social enterprise principles that helps people understand and engage with the places they live in. Through the provision of advice, training, education, engagement events and awareness-raising, we ensure that everyone has the capacity to create positive communities.
PAS works at grass-roots level with local communities and community groups to help them reach a shared vision for their area in terms of land use, community assets and improved service delivery. Our ethos is based on achieving genuine participation, through detailed research and preparation, use of innovative engagement techniques and involvement of trained and experienced facilitators/mediators.
The PAS Board creates a strategic and policy framework for PAS and is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the organisation fulfils its statutory requirements.
The Board focuses on strategic direction and vision rather than organisational management and service delivery. In achieving this, the Board’s key consideration is how to implement the organisation’s charitable aims and objectives and its Strategy.
The PAS Board is now looking to recruit new Board members with expertise in any of the following areas:
- Financial Planning
The Board meets 4 times a year (usually on a Thursday evening, 6 – 8pm) at the PAS office in central Edinburgh. The AGM takes place in October / November, and there is an annual staff/board away day. There are also 4 advisory groups – Business Development; Education; Volunteering, and Planning & Policy. In addition, the Staffing & Resources group assists and advises the Chief Executive and makes binding recommendations to the Board.
Board Members serve a three-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.
Service on the PAS Board is without remuneration. Travel, training and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties will be reimbursed
This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is passionate about PAS’s mission. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, planning/built environment, public, private or third sector.
Ideal candidates will have the following:
- Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government or the non-profit sector
- A commitment to and understanding of PAS’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
- Diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving participation in the place agenda
The planning system is founded on the principles of social equity, equality and delivering public good. Over 20% of planning professionals in Scotland volunteer with PAS, giving their knowledge, experience and time to help people of all ages and backgrounds to participate, at the earliest opportunity, in placemaking.
