Outlook image for EventbriteTo coincide with Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016, the two-day international conference in Edinburgh will celebrate the impact and legacy of Sir Patrick Geddes, polymath, botanist and founding father of town planning. The Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP, will open the event.

The conference will run over two days on 18-19 August in Edinburgh, involving a series of interactive seminars and workshops, fusing together strands of academic and practice-based thinking from Scotland and all around the world.

Taking part in this event will be folk of various ages, nationalities and disciplines – including leading thinkers, artists, architects and planners from around the world. The first day of events will hear from young people about their sense of place as well as a range of thinkers, artists, architects, educationalists and planners. Day two will provide opportunities for hands-on learning and research with several practical art and design workshops.

Petra Biberbach, Chief Executive of PAS, said:

“Founding Father of town planning, Sir Patrick Geddes, blurred the boundaries between work, family and play – he saw ‘life as whole’ and inspired many people around him to do the same – which is why the conference will mark the launch of the Patrick Geddes Young Placemakers Award.”

The conference will coincide with the launch of the Patrick Geddes Young Placemakers Award – inviting young people from schools across Scotland to think about their local places and communities and consider how they can be improved through a spirit of holistic enquiry. A number of young people taking part in the Award will participate in the conference and share their ideas.

Bookings for the event can be made online here and the programme is available here.
