Current Development Plan

The Highland-wide Local Development Plan (April 2012) is the overarching development plan for the Highland area and contains many of the general policies.

Alongside this the Council is working towards the adoption of three area local development plans:

Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan
Caithness and Sutherland
West Highland and Islands Local Development Plan

Until all the local development plans are adopted, several Local Plans will remain in place.

New Development Plan

Under the 2006 planning reforms, Local Authorities are required to produce a new kind of Development Plan. The Highland Council have agreed with Scottish Ministers that one Local Development Plan (LDP) for the whole area would be inadequate. Thus, a Highland-Wide LDP has replaced the structure plan and 3 area LDPs have been prepared. These area LDPs cover Caithness and Sutherland, Inner Moray Firth, as well as West Highlands and Islands.
